The Top 15 Biggest Fights in Cricket History

Some entertaining while others went a bit too far, today we discuss the 15 biggest fights in Cricket history. Grab your popcorn and read on!

Cricket is a gentleman’s game but there is always some room for a little banter amidst the heat of the immense competition on the field. It all makes the game more alive and fiery.

But it gets a little crazier when the fire in the eyes rolls over the turf hitting the flame. Nonetheless, it seems like it adds some missing chunks of entertainment to the game of cricket.

From Kieron Pollard vs Mitchell Starc to Monkeygate, let us explore the top 15 biggest fights in cricket history.

The Top 15 Biggest Fights in Cricket History

These are the biggest fights in cricket history that took the world by a storm.

15. Brian Lara vs Danish Kaneria

Anyone would probably think a hundred times before having banter fun with someone like Brian Lara and that too when he is in the wristy flow with the willow.

One such incident happened in the 2006 Multan Test when Danish Kaneria, the Pakistan spinner, tried to get the better of Lara.

Kaneria bowled a googly to which Lara responded with a defense. But Danish taunted, “Well played, Brian”. Lara replied, “Okay, Sir”. That was it.

Brian, instantly, got in a mood to show who was the genuine ‘Sir’. He hit Kaneria for 6, 6, 6, 4 on the next four balls bowled in the slot and Lara raced to 92 runs.

Later, Lara went on to make 216 runs alone.

It eventually turned out to be a stupid act from Danish Kaneria though he got Lara 5 times in his career. It is always risky to tease someone of Lara’s caliber.

14. Venkatesh Prasad vs Amir Sohail

India and Pakistan cricket contests have always been tense. The pressure of outplaying each other is immense.

And when it is about World Cup knockouts, one can imagine the level of the duel. The heat is always on.

This heating effect was seen in the 1996 World Cup quarter-final when Amir Sohail hit a boundary off Venkatesh Prasad’s bowl and then arrogantly pointed towards the area where he hit to sledge Prasad.

At the moment, Sohail was smashing every other ball and looked like he would get it for Pakistan.

But on the very next ball, the motivated Prasad destroyed Sohail’s stumps that could be seen flying for some seconds.

This was Prasad’s turn to give a healthy send-off to the southpaw by waving his hands angrily.

This fudge became quite famous after Venkatesh took a total of 3 wickets and India won the match by 39 runs. It all came in India’s favor.

13. Gautam Gambhir vs Shahid Afridi

Gautam Gambhir versus Shahid Afridi was one of the biggest adversaries whenever the arch-rivals used to come under the same hut.

They both never shy away from expressing their anger and avidity.

It was the 20th over of the 3rd ODI of the series, 2007, that Gambhir collided with Afridi while taking a run.

That collision led both of them to exchange a few words which turned out to be serious jibes at each other.

So much so that the on-field Umpire Ian Gould had to interfere to calm down both the players.

Though both of them did not contribute well with the bat in the match but initiated a long-lasting rivalry between the duo.

Even today, after the retirement of both of them from the game, there is some direct-indirect sledging on social media platforms.

It seems as if they have developed a lifelong animosity toward each other.

12. Virat Kohli vs Kesrick Williams

This was one of the strange and equally interesting duels that happened on the field.

Virat Kohli is a player who is known to wear his heart out on his sleeves each time when he enters the field.

Kohli took everyone by surprise in the first T20I of the series, 2019 against WI, when he frequently gestured the notebook-signature celebration after hitting over Kesrick Williams’ bowling.

It was Williams’ trademark celebration that Kohli did.

The shock and awe could be seen on the bowler’s face. Kohli smashed Williams for 32 in 12 balls he bowled.

Interestingly, later Kohli clarified that he remembered the send-off from the same bowler from the last tour, so he gave it back. Yes, he remembers everyone.

Though Kohli stated that he did not mean to disrespect anyone, it was just a way to have fun. But this funny banter turned out to be a famous one.

11. Michael Clarke vs James Anderson

The Ashes has been one of the most ferocious contests between the nations in cricket. England and Australia are nothing less than arch-rivals in Tests.

It was the 1st Test of the 2013 Ashes that got highlighted for an ugly sledge banter.

At the moment when Australia needed just 1 wicket to win the Tests, Michael Clarke angrily warned James Anderson, the last batter for England.

He said to Jimmy, “Get ready for a broken f*ckin arm. Face up.”

It was unnecessary and a terrible sledge. However, Australia won the match by a mammoth 381 runs.

Later, the English captain, Alastair Cook tried to defend Clarke’s act. But many greats raised eyebrows over the ugly remarks from Clarke.

10. Sreesanth vs Harbhajan Singh

Usually, the franchise leagues are said to be an acting force behind reducing the awful sledging and fights but some duels had heated up in it too. IPL is no stranger.

A very nasty incident happened in the first season of the IPL in 2008.

After the Kings 11 Punjab beat Mumbai Indians, Harbhajan Singh was allegedly seen slapping the opponent pacer Sreesanth while shaking the hands.

Sreesanth was also seen crying after the match.

It was said that overexcited by the win, Sreesanth tried to play with Bhajji that made him angry and he slapped.

This was the wickedest act that has been seen on the Cricket field to date.

9. Darren Sammy vs James Faulkner

West Indian players are some of the nicest and fun-loving blokes in cricket. It is hard to hate them. But Australians did not find them that way.

Just before the WI vs Aus match in the 2014 World Cup, the Australian bowler, James Faulkner said, “I don’t particularly like them (WI). Nobody in particular.

Darren sammy vs james faulkner: Biggest Fights in Cricket History

Good players are good players, but you have to do things to get under their skin and try and irritate them to try and get them off their game.

This hate triggered the West Indies captain and player. In the match, Sammy made 34 off just 13 balls and snatched a close win from Australia’s jaws.

The heat could be seen in the way of celebration made by the West Indian player after the enthralling win. It was ferocious.

8. Shane Warne vs Marlon Samuels

The duel between Marlon Samuels and Shane Warne happened in the 2013 Big Bash League match when Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars clashed.

Samuels was seen trying to hold David Hussey’s shirt when the latter went for the second run.

The Stars captain, Shane Warne did not take this lightly.

He retaliated when Samuels came out to bat by similarly pulling his Shirt and said a few words despite being on the mic.

Warne, even, threw the ball towards Samuels while fielding. This ignited a battle between the duo.

Later, Marlon Samuels dedicated his ‘player of the match’ award in the final of ICC WT20 to Warne stating that he answered with the bat and not with the mic.

7. Jasprit Bumrah vs James Anderson

This is one of the recent battles when India and England collided with each other in a 5 Test match series in England.

After the first Test match was drawn, India batted well at Lords.

When Anderson came to bat at number 11, Jasprit Bumrah was suddenly seen fired up. He bowled a 10 ball over and target Jimmy’s head with his nasty bouncers on the trot.

It did not seem as if he was trying to get him out. Later, when Bumrah came out to bat, he was attacked by a bunch of English players with words.

But Bumrah responded with his 34 not out by adding 89 runs for the ninth wicket at a crucial stage.

Eventually, India won the match by historic 151 runs. But the tussle between the players continued for the rest of the series.

6. James Anderson vs Mitchell Johnson

Next up on our list of the biggest fights in cricket history is the one between two fast-bowling legends.

The Ashes 2013-14 was one the best and entertaining series to date. Both teams were playing with a fire in them.

The flames could be seen between James Anderson and Mitchell Johnson.

Ryan Harris was on strike and England had gone wicketless for a significant number of overs.

James Anderson was bowling at the other end when Mitchell Johnson tried to excited him by saying, “Why are you chirping now mate, not getting any wickets?” But Jimmy did not react.

Off the very next delivery, Anderson destroyed the stumps of Harris.

He immediately turned to Johnson and shushed him. This was probably the best reply by any bowler to a batsman.

5. Harbhajan Singh vs Andrew Symonds

Undoubtedly, this was the most highlighted sledging incident in the history of cricket.

Famously known as “Monkeygate” was all about Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh and Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds.

It happened in 2008 in Sydney Test. Australia was a bit frustrated with the 8th wicket partnership involving Bhajji.

At some point, Symonds and Harbhajan exchanged a few words. Later, Aussie players alleged that Bhajji sledged racially by saying ‘Monkey’ to Symonds.

But Harbhajan denied the imputation.

This sparked a firm controversy demanding a ban on the culprits.

This incident severely pampered the images of both the players, but Harbhajan got the backing of Indian management.

4. R. Ashwin vs Tim Paine

This one was a classic sledging incident. It happened during the Border Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia.

The Sydney Test, 3rd of the series stood at a crucial moment on the final day as both teams were equal with 1-1 and this Test was in Australia’s hands too as India were 5 down and needed to bat another 40 over to draw the match.

With Vihar being injured at another end, R Ashwin needed to step up with the bat.

Paine said from behind the wickets, “I can’t wait to get you to the Gabba, Ash, I’ll tell you what, woohoo,” To this Ashwin replied, “Just like we want to get you to India. That will be your last series.”

When Paine met India at Gabba, he came to know what mistake he had made.

India won the Gabba Test after 32 years. Paine could not regret more for his remarks in the previous Test.

3. Yuvraj Singh vs Andrew Flintoff

Have you heard any better story of ‘sledging went wrong’ than the Yuvi-Flintoff face off at the inaugural World T20?

Yuvi hit a boundary off a yorker from Flintoff to which latter criticised the shot and threatened Yuvi by saying, “I am gonna cut your throat off.”

Yuvi showed the bat and replied, “you see this bat in my hand? You know where I am gonna hit you with this bat?” Umpire had to cool down both of them.

No one sensed what was gonna happen in the next over. Yuvi hit 6 sixes off 6 balls of the over from Stuart Broad. This was the side effect of making Yuvraj angry.

He almost finished Broad’s white-ball career.

It was like a virtual tight slap on Flintoff’s face from Yuvi. It was like Yuvi wanted to show that if he would have hit his head with the bat, it would roll over in the sky like ball 6 times.

2. Sourav Ganguly vs Andrew Flintoff

This was a long story. It was not an actual sledging incident. It was more than that. It was about self-respect and courage.

It all started in the final ODI at Wankhede Stadium of the 6 match series between India and England.

India needed 11 runs to win the match and series but Flintoff denied India a win in a close encounter.

Right after the last ball, Flintoff could be seen waving his T-Shirt in hand, running and doing wild celebrations.

The disappointment on the face of Ganguly could be seen from miles.

Later, in the same year, India and England met at the final of the Natwest Tri-series at Lords. Indian was losing the match until Yuvi and Kaif batted out a historic win over England.

As soon as Zaheer and Kaif completed the winning run, Dada took off his T-Shirt in the same way Flintoff did a few days back, but this time Dada did it from the Lord’s balcony which was a statement from India and its captain.

1. Kieron Pollard vs Mitchell Starc

This furious, crazy incident took place back in IPL 2014 in a match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

In the 17th over, Starc bowled a bouncer that was missed by Pollard to which Starc tried to sledge him a bit.

Off the next bowl, Starc started his run-up but Pollard stopped midway.

Starc wasn’t in a mood to back off and he bowled the orb at the Pollard’s body which got the latter extremely angry.

To everyone’s surprise, Pollard instantly threw his bat towards Starc in a forceful way but he was lucky that it did not reach the pacer.

This was a fatal and toxic act by both of the contestants. Fans came to their edge of the seats but this time not due to the scoreline but a hateful act.

Later, Pollard was fined 75% of his match fee whereas Starc got penalised for 50% of his fee.

  28. I have observed that over the course of developing a relationship with real estate homeowners, you’ll be able to get them to understand that, in every real estate deal, a fee is paid. In the end, FSBO sellers don’t “save” the fee. Rather, they fight to earn the commission by doing a good agent’s task. In accomplishing this, they devote their money and time to perform, as best they can, the obligations of an representative. Those tasks include exposing the home by way of marketing, delivering the home to willing buyers, making a sense of buyer urgency in order to make prompt an offer, scheduling home inspections, dealing with qualification check ups with the loan provider, supervising maintenance, and facilitating the closing of the deal.
