The fantasy sports market in India is valued at $150 billion and shows no signs of slowing down. With so many fantasy sports apps coming up, fans have an overabundance of options to choose from.
According to an IFSG-KPMG report, the Indian fantasy sports industry has over 60 startups currently, with over 100 million players expected to play on one or more fantasy sports apps.
Today we are going to discuss the 2 leading fantasy cricket apps out there- Dream11 and Mobile Premier League aka MPL.
While one is strengthened by the one and only Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the other one is represented by Indian team captain- Virat Kohli. In this fight between Dhoni and Kohli, let’s see who emerges victoriously!
Dream11 vs MPL: Which one is Better?
In order to find out which of these two fantasy sports apps are better- Dream11 or MPL- we will be testing each of these apps in the following categories:
- Number of users
- App Features
- Fantasy Point System
- Regular vs Safe Play
- Team Composition
Are you ready? Let’s begin our review!
1. Number of Users
Dream11 Total Users: Founded in the way back in 2008, Dream11 became the first Indian startup to enter the Unicorn club. Dream11 had over 50 million users in 2019 and is aiming to cross 100 million (over 10 crores) users by the end of 2020.
Dream11 was launched way back in 2008 when the concept of fantasy sports was unknown in India.
Last year in 2019, BCCI signed up Dream11 as the IPL’s official fantasy sports partner until 2022, bringing in a ton of credibility to the fantasy sports market in India.

MPL Total Users: The latest member of India’s growing fantasy sports market is MPL. A Bengaluru based startup, MPL currently boasts of over 4 crore users.
Just before IPL 2019, MPL roped in Virat Kohli as its brand ambassador at a deal rumored to be valued at 12 crores.
The Verdict: As the numbers suggest, Dream11 is clearly ahead of the crowd, with almost 3 times the users as MPL. Moreover, with partnerships with the BCCI, Dream11 has proved itself as a “safe” app to play fantasy cricket and transact funds.
However, more users mean more competition. Since MPL has fewer users than Dream11, it typically has less competition and less competition equals more chances of winning! In this round of Dream11 vs MPL, MPL wins!
2. App Features
Let us explore the insides of both the apps.
Dream11: The app is pretty clean with a simple user interface. As soon as you open the app, you are presented with a list of upcoming games you can join and play.

Dream11 supports 4 fantasy sports- Cricket, Football, Basketball, and Baseball. The “Feed” section at the bottom is where you can build your fan following, follow other fantasy players, and engage with Dream11’s fantasy players.
The “Groups” tab where you can create a group with your friends and chat with them about the game and challenge them in private competition.
MPL: MPL’s user interface is a bit overwhelming. It took me a while to understand what’s going on as the app is filled with games and sports you can play to win money and credits.

Apart from Cricket, MPL has plenty of options for you to choose from- Football, Basketball, and Baseball, Stock market contests, Pool, Chess, and much more.
You can also do live audio/video streams and connect with people, giving MPL a much more community-like feel.
The Verdict: Both apps are well designed and are easy to use. However, MPL is a bit too complicated for new users.

Dream11 allows you to interact with other fantasy players and create groups with your friends while MPL lacks such features.
If you are looking to play fantasy cricket and are not interested in any other mobile games, Dream11 should be your preferred choice. Although, if you like options, MPL is a feature-rich app you must check out.

3. Fantasy Point System
The point system in both the app is quite alike. Each app gives 2x points for your captain and 1.5x points for your vice-captain. However, in both the apps, the point system changes based on the format you are playing, ie. T20, Test, ODI, or T10.
Last year, Dream11 made some key changes in its points scoring system, doubling all previous points. This means that Dream11 now gives 1 point per run which was previously 0.5. MPL, however, offers 0.5 points per run scored by a player.
Dream11 rewards 25 points to bowlers (in ODIs) for taking a wicket while MPL gives 12 points more for taking wickets. For a detailed breakdown in the points scoring system, check out the following links:
The Verdict: Both apps have a somewhat similar scoring system and it doesn’t matter which app you choose.
4. Referral Bonus
Both the app offers you cash prize if you refer the app to your friend and they join in with your referral code.
Dream11 Referral Bonus: Dream11 gives Rs.100 cash bonus per friend you invite.

MPL Referral Bonus: MPL offers a Rs.75 cash bonus per friend you invite.
The Verdict: Since Dream11 offers more referral bonus, we think it takes a point here.
5. Team Composition
Team composition means how many wicketkeepers, batsmen, bowlers, and all-rounders you can add to your team. Different fantasy cricket platforms have different rules regarding this.
Wicketkeepers: You can select up to four wicketkeepers in your Dream11 as well as MPL teams
Batsmen: You can select 3-6 batsmen in your Dream 11 squad as well as MPL squad.
All-rounders: In Dream11 as well as MPL, you can select 1-4 all-rounders in your team.
Bowlers: In Dream11 as well as MPL, you can select 3-6 bowlers in your team.
The Verdict: Both MPL and Dream11 offer the exact same team composition. Hence, it’s a tie.
Which one do you like- Dream11 or MPL?
So, there you have it, folks- our review of Dream11 vs MPL. As you can see, both apps are quite different in their offerings, interface, and overall target market.
While Dream11 targets hardcore cricket lovers, MPL’s target audience is anyone who is looking to play mobile games and earn money from it as well.
If you are a cricket fan and want to have the best possible experience of fantasy cricket in India, Dream11 is the app for you.
However, if you are someone who’s looking to pass some time and earn some quick money along the way, MPL might be the app for you.
We would suggest you try out both the apps and make your decision, or better, play on both! All the best!
