Back in 2009, Ashutosh Srivastava, a private coach in Shahdol, spotted Vastrakar. She was playing cricket with boys and hitting them for huge sixes.

Pooja Vastrakar Career
After being spotted by Ashutosh Srivastava, the coach of Gulmohar Cricket Academy, Pooja started training under her guidance.
Since there were no women’s cricket team in Shahdol, Pooja was included in the boy’s team. She has played for the Under-14, Under-16, and later, even the Under-19 boy’s team.
Playing with the boys was not a challenge for Pooja as she has played cricket with boys since the age of 4.
Unfortunately, destiny had other plans for Pooja as only a few days after joining the cricket academy, her mother passed away. This was a shocking loss to a 10-year old Pooja who stopped playing cricket and going to the academy after her mother’s demise.
However, coach Srivastava didn’t want a talented sports star like Vastrakar to leave the sport. He talked to Pooja’s father and encouraged them to continue Pooja’s training.
Thankfully, Pooja returned to the academy and resumed her training under Srivastava.
While she always wanted to be a batter, an injury to her finger forced her to play as a bowler in one match. After watching her bowl, the coach made the decision to focus on Vastrakar’s bowling more and turned her into a bowling all-rounder.
Vastrakar used to play for the Shahdol Shahdol Divisional Cricket Association. However, her first major break in domestic cricket came on 9th March 2013 when she made her debut for Madhya Pradesh against Odisha in a T20 match.
International Career
Three years after making her domestic debut, Pooja was eying national call-up. The West Indian team was coming to India in November 2016 for a series, and Pooja was certain she would be included in the Indian national team.
However, while fielding during a senior women’s domestic match she twisted her knee resulting in an ACL tear. While her coach feared that Pooja might not be able to bowl again, the fast-bowler was confident she would make her comeback soon.
This is what Pooja’s coach said in an interview after her injury-
“When she twisted her knee and had to get the surgery done in January last year, I was the one who was depressed,”. But Pooja was confident she’d get through it all. When she returned home, after getting some 15-20 days of rest and her rehab, her zeal to make it to the Indian side only got stronger.”.
It was her passion and grit that helped Pooja bowl again. Around 1.5 years later, Pooja finally got to make her International debut for India against South Africa in February 2018.
She made her T20I debut against the same opponent on13 February 2018. Vastrakar made her Test debut on 16 June 2021 against England.
Owing to her good performances, Pooja was added to the Indian squad for the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand.
