During her childhood years, Rajeshwari used to play javelin and discus throw and was not keen on playing cricket. 

However, his father was a huge cricket fan and wanted to see her daughters represent the Indian national team. 

In a shocking turn of events, just a few months after being selected in the national side, Rajeshwari’s father died of a heart attack. 

While watching an IPL game in 2014 with his daughters, Rajeshwari’s father suffered a cardiac arrest in the stadium. Sadly, her father was able to see her daughter don the national colours but couldn’t watch her success. 

Rajeshwari Gayakwad Early Career

While most professional cricketers begin their journey at an early age, Gayakwad was a late bloomer. She started playing cricket at the age of 18. 

Prior to that, Rajeshwari was interested in playing Javelin and discus throw. However, once she started gaining interest in cricket, there was no looking back for her. 

The domestic teams in India soon recognised her talent and she was called up to play for the Karanataka side. 

While playing cricket, She also pursued her education as she was not sure that cricket is a viable career option for women in India. 

She went to BLDE’s Arts & Commerce College for women to pursue a BA degree in Karnataka. 

International Career

Her strong performances in the domestic competitions saw Rajeshwari Gayakwad get her maiden India call-up in 2014. She made her ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka in January 2014. 

In her debut match, Gayakwad bowled three maidens out of the 7.3 overs she bowled. She gave only 11 runs and took 2 wickets, announcing her talent to the world. 

Rajeshwari made her T20I debut a week later, against the same opponent at Vizianagaram. She conceded just 24 runs in her quota of 4 overs and took 3 wickets. 

The spinner made her Test debut in November 2014 against South Africa at Tamil Nadu. In typical Rajeshwari fashion, she took 5 wickets on her debut. 

World Cup Heroics

Owing to her good performances in international cricket, she was added to the ODI World Cup squad of 2017. 

She took 5 for 15 in the group stage match against New Zealand, helping team India reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.
